Entering a major tournament with an injury, no matter how minor it may be, is not exactly ideal for anybody.

But Nelly Korda has no choice but to go through pain in her pursuit of winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship – which kicks off on Thursday – for what would be just the second time of her young career.

Korda revealed the extent of her injury in her media availability

The current women’s golf world No. 1 has revealed that she is dealing with a neck injury following a spasm during a practice round at Fields Ranch East on Monday.

The injury ruled her out of attending the champion’s dinner, and upon arrival to her pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday, images surfaced of her sporting kinesiology tape on the affected area of her neck.

“Nelly Korda has KT-tape on her neck. She says she injured it while hitting a shot from the rough during a practice round ahead of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship on Monday. She says she had to skip last night’s champions dinner due to the injury,” golf journalist Amy Rogers posted on X.

Korda went on to explain further how she aggravated the injury in her pre tournament media conference.

“I hit a shot out of the rough yesterday, and my neck went into a full spasm,” Korda explained.

“It’s getting better, but yeah, it was not very good yesterday.”

She also alluded to how the injury has impacted her preparation going into the latest major, saying it has also affected her swing somewhat.

However, she knows she needs to play it smart to put her body in the best position possible to chase the major.

“Obviously with the injury that I had last year, every single time something kind of flares up in my neck now, I think I feel it a little bit more than what I used to.

“But I have a great physio who takes care of me. Trying to work through it, but I’ll be ready by Thursday.”

Korda is chasing the third major title of her career

“It’s going to be hot this week too, so making sure you’re rested, and depending on how your body feels, you have to make a plan just how your body feels and be smart about it.”

This isn’t the first time that the two-time major champion has experienced issues with her neck.

Korda also suffered a minor neck injury toward the end of last season, which forced her to withdraw from multiple LGPA events during the Asian Swing.

Korda, a 15-time LPGA Tour winner, is looking to better her second-place finish in the US Women’s Open at Erin Hills last month, where she finished two shots behind champion, Maja Stark.

The Women’s PGA Championship will be the American’s third major this year, and Korda will be hoping it is third time lucky as it pertains to a win, having placed a disappointing T14 in The Chevron Championship and then a tie for second at the U.S. Open.

In fact, her last victory in any capacity, came at the ANNIKA tournament held at the Pelican Golf Club last November.

Having missed the cut for the 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in 2024, Korda will be dearly hoping that her neck injury doesn’t produce that same outcome for a second successive year.

Nonetheless, having been forced to miss events in the past, one of the biggest stars in women’s golf is determined to battle through injury – and perform well – on her quest to claim that coveted first win of 2025.
