The Former Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, warned of worsening developments in the Middle East following Israel’s attacks on Iran and the escalation of the situation into war.
The former Arab diplomat said in a post on his official Facebook account that. “The ongoing war between Israel and Iran and the signs of direct intervention by the major powers, or some of them, pose serious threats to regional security in the Middle East, affecting its countries and societies.”
Moussa, who served as Egypt’s Foreign Minister for 10 years – from 1991 to 2001 – explained that Egypt and the Egyptian people “are not far from this threat” to regional security, RT reported.
The senior diplomat urged the need to convene an urgent meeting of the Egyptian National Security Council, in accordance with Article 205 of the Egyptian Constitution, which established the Council.
Moussa pointed out that the top priorities of the Egyptian National Security Council are identifying the sources of threats to Egyptian national security, both domestically and abroad, and taking the necessary measures to address them.
Another war grips the region
The Middle East is witnessing a dangerous escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran, as the two countries have exchanged direct military attacks since dawn on Friday, raising fears that the conflict could escalate into a comprehensive regional war that threatens the stability of the entire region.
The crisis began with Israeli strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and Iranian scientists, followed by Iranian responses with missiles and drones, escalating tensions primarily related to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program. This escalation coincides with other regional tensions, including the war in Gaza since October 2023 and clashes in Lebanon and Syria.
The Egyptian National Security Council, established under Article 205 of the 2014 Egyptian Constitution, is considered a vital body for confronting internal and external security threats. The council, chaired by President Sisi, includes senior military and civilian officials and is tasked with developing strategies to address crises that threaten national security.
