Ben Askren’s wife has revealed her husband remains in hospital on a ventilator as his battle with illness continues.

Amy Askren, the former UFC star’s partner, has said that Askren’s body ‘can’t handle coming off sedation,’ and he may need to undergo a lung transplant.

MMA legend Askren, 40, was rushed to hospital 10 days ago with severe pneumonia, which was later confirmed by his wife.

‘Funky’ was bed-bound in hospital unresponsive as UFC commentator and good friend of Askren Daniel Cormier last week confirmed that he had been transferred to his home town of Wisconsin.

Amy provided a fresh update on her husband’s condition via Facebook on Tuesday evening, as fans were speculating on the condition of the former fighter.

“I haven’t shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while and I was hoping to have him wake up and be the one to decide what to share,” she wrote.

“I’ve had some media people contact me that they are going to share an update and I would rather it come from me.

“Ben is still on a ventilator and ECMO [a technique that oxygenates blood outside the body] to support him while he heals.

“There are good days and bad, but on the good, they have been able to wean his sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands.

“His body can’t handle coming off sedation too much yet. I’m still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for lung transplant.”

Amy then asked fans to pray for her husband’s ‘continued healing,’ while asserting that he would be able to get on a transplant list quickly if that was the right way to move forward.

“I know transplants are such a blessing and I’m overwhelmed at the thought of him receiving a gift like that,” she added.

“No one would take better care of that gift than Ben. Thank you for every message and all of the support.

“Despite this awful situation, I’m feeling so blessed by the community we’re surrounded by.

“Give your loved ones a hug today and make sure you’re prepared situations like this. Ben is the healthiest guy I know and I never could have expected this.”

Askren had three fights during his time in the UFC where he was known for his elite wrestling skills.

The 40-year-old lost two of his three fights in 2019, but marked a successful debut with an epic win over fellow veteran Robbie Lawler.

He then suffered one of the promotion’s most famous knockouts, as Jorge Masvidal stopped him in five seconds with a flying knee at UFC 239.

And his last outing in the Octagon came in October of that year, where he was submitted by Demian Maia.

Despite that being his final UFC appearance, Askren wasn’t finished in combat sports, as he proceeded to enter the squared circle.

‘Funky’ famously clashed with Jake Paul in a high-profile 2021 boxing fight, but was stopped by the young American inside one round in his one and only professional boxing fight to date.

He has previously got himself into excellent shape and issued a call-out for a rematch with Masvidal, but a comeback is unlikely.

Askren had a hugely successful career where he boasted a 19-2 record MMA record with one no-contest decision.

He held welterweight titles at Bellator and ONE after representing the U.S at the Olympics and National championships in freestyle wrestling.
