D-backs 3B Eugenio Suarez: Our mentality is win, not give front office the chance to trade you ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made it clear that they are prepared to buy at the trade deadline if in position to do so, and a five-game winning streak last week despite bummer injury news was a sign this team is not going away.

The upcoming stretch of games, including nine straight against last-place clubs starting Friday, is a potential runway for the Diamondbacks to climb from “in the hunt” to a postseason spot. Doing so could simmer down some of the trade rumors that have circulated around the team, which the players are not oblivious of.

Third baseman Eugenio Suarez, a veteran leader and subject of trade speculation as an upcoming free agent, said team confidence remains high.

“This is something that obviously you think about, but … our mentality is think about winning games and not giving the chance to the front office to trade you,” Suarez told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “Because if we continue to win games and we end up in the good position to make the playoffs, I don’t think they’re gonna make those moves.

“Obviously we understand this game, we know how that works. But nobody on this team, I can tell you, nobody on this team wants to get traded. We came here for a reason and our reason is to make the playoffs and try to win the World Series.”

This has been a consistent message of late as the D-backs have been “swarmed” with calls from other teams looking to bolster their own rosters. Just on Tuesday morning, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden devised trades he’d like to see and included Suarez to Detroit and Josh Naylor to Seattle on the list.

Managing partner Ken Kendrick told Burns & Gambo on Monday that if circumstances suggest investing further would give the team a legitimate shot at the postseason, his group would do so. Arizona has its highest payroll at just under $200 million with many key pieces in walk years, adding urgency to this season.

Ace Corbin Burnes and closer Justin Martinez are out for the year. Reliever A.J. Puk’s status is in the air as he visits orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday.

And yet, the Diamondbacks have started June with a 9-4 record and are three games back of a Wild Card spot. FanGraphs gives them a reasonable yet rocky 35.3% chance to make the postseason.

“We’ve been dealing with injuries, we’ve been dealing with some bad losses as a team,” Suarez said. “We lost Corbin Burnes, J-Mart and that hurts our team.

“But we have confidence. We know still with the injuries we have a chance … we’ve been playing really good baseball lately. All the little things that help the team win games, we’ve been doing it well, so we just gotta continue, that’s our mentality right now. Try to not do too much, but by doing the little things either defensively, even offensively or base running, everything matters right now. We’ve been playing really good baseball lately, and that’s something that would send the message that we are not done yet.”

Despite injuries, Eugenio Suarez has seen the D-backs' confidence grow lately.

Merrill Kelly on Sunday said the team is in a good spot considering it has yet to go on the type of run many of its counterparts have. Perhaps that run can be ongoing if the D-backs build on their performances against Seattle and San Diego.

Eugenio Suarez continues to see results after routine change last year

No duo in MLB has brought more power than Suarez and Corbin Carroll, who recently became the first pair of teammates to eclipse 20 home runs. Suarez hit his 21st on Sunday to retake the team lead.

It is fitting they are paired together, as both players had to crawl out of the muck of poor first halves last season to find success again.

One year ago to the date, neither of them held an OPS above .611. The D-backs moved Carroll down in the order, while Suarez nearly faced getting designated for assignment. They made the necessary adjustments, with Carroll altering his mechanics while Suarez reimagined his pregame work.

Suarez added a level of intensity to his pregame work to heat up faster and stay warm, which he’s been open about. That routine has continued to bring results this season.

“I’ve been putting more intensity in my workout, trying to come in earlier and warm up my body because sometimes you think you feel good but you’re getting old man and your body’s gotta be in shape,” Suarez said. “It’s something I’ve been working hard on my body and keeping my body warm. I do some routine with the strength conditioning (coaches) and they help me so much to stay ready … I come in with the same mentality every time that you gotta stay ready the whole day.”

Suarez has gone deep 20 or more times every season since 2016 — excluding 2020’s shortened campaign — the only player in MLB with that feat (so far). Carroll, meanwhile, has hit 20 homers for three straight years, becoming the only Diamondbacks player to do so before turning 25 years old.

They are the third D-backs duo to reach 20 home runs before the All-Star break in club history, a milestone previously hit by Jay Bell and Matt Williams in 1999 and Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb in 2017.

Their battle for the team’s home run leader has gone back-and-forth all year.
