5 SEC stars land in 1st round of ESPN’s updated NBA mock draft ...Middle East

The 2025 NBA Draft is just 8 days away and there’s several former SEC stars who could end up as high selections in this year’s draft.

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Wood released their latest mock on Tuesday morning, which includes 5 ex-SEC standouts projected as first-round picks. The list includes Texas guard Tre Johnson, Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles, Georgia center Asa Newell and Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr.

Johnson is projected to be the first former SEC player off the board, per ESPN. This mock has Johnson going No. 5 overall to the Utah Jazz. Here’s an excerpt of analysis from Woo:

Johnson’s excellent perimeter shooting and room to develop as an all-around scorer will make him enticing. Bailey, who continues sliding down the board in this scenario, doesn’t appear to have much interest in Utah and is viewed by most teams as a riskier bet. Expect Jeremiah Fears, and Knueppel, if available, to receive long looks as well.

Fears is not far behind, projected to go No. 7 overall. He’s on track to be Oklahoma’s first first-round pick in the NBA Draft since Trae Young in 2018.

Murray-Boyles is a potential lottery pick, but he goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder at No. 15 overall in this mock. The former South Carolina forward is known for his defensive prowess and good playmaking ability for his role.

Newell is coming off of an excellent freshman season at Georgia and is mocked at No. 18 to the Washington Wizards in this projection.

Clayton is one of the older prospects in this class but is perhaps the most accomplished in this draft following a National Championship run with the Gators. Clayton is an elite shot-maker, which is what lands him at No. 29 overall to Phoenix in this mock.

There are no Kentucky players included in the first round of this mock, although Koby Brea and Amari Williams are both named in the second round. The Wildcats have produced at least one first round pick in every draft since 2009.

The 2025 NBA Draft is set for June 25.
