Shubman Gill can handle Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli’s absence, says ex-England Test captain ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

Shubman Gill has been thrown into the deep end. The amount of pressure one has on their shoulders as India’s Test captain is indeterminable. Gill doesn’t just have to show his might as a batter but also as a captain. It’ll be tough to juggle both responsibilities. Especially when you consider that Gill hasn’t been able to stand up to the expectations with the bat.

Challenges Gill faces as India’s Test captain

This in itself is difficult to handle. But Gill’s first assignment as India’s Test captain is touring England, a country where India hasn’t won since 2007. He doesn’t have the services of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom retired from Test cricket last month. Jasprit Bumrah won’t likely be available for all five matches either.

It’s a tough task. And former England Test captain realises it. But he believes Indian cricket has the talent to overcome all of these problems. Sai Sudharsan, Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair, and Dhruv Jurel are ready to fill up those spots left by Rohit and Kohli. No one might be able to replicate what Bumrah has been doing, but the talent is certainly there with the likes of Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj.

“It’s a new era, isn’t it? My view is that if one door closes, another one opens. I’m sure they’ll give a good account of themselves. Talent in the Indian cricket team is undoubted. It’s just that there’s some big shoes to fill with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring. It will be a big loss if Bumrah doesn’t lead the attack in all the games. I mean, obviously, he’s a world-class bowler,” Gooch told the Times of India.

Is ready for them?

But the former batter, most famous for scoring that triple hundred against India in 1990, believes that Gill can handle whatever will come his way in the India vs England Test series. He has shown his ability to lead in the Indian Premier League and was made white-ball vice-captain last year at the age of 24 as well.

“The pressure will be on, but some of the younger players will have to step up. And the captain, it’s a great honour to captain your country, and I’m sure he’ll (Gill) handle it in a good way,” Gooch added.
