A new price tracking tool from Consumer Reports aims to help consumers navigate troubling tariff waters as prices begin to be affected.
The non-profit chose to track 16 items, starting with coffee because “that’s what you start your day with,” according to Chris Raymond, Deputy Editor at Consumer Reports. They also included the popular Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Other items were chosen based on their popularity on the Consumer Reports website, such as the LG washer and Panasonic microwave. Essential items like diapers also made the list.
“I will just say we just last week saw the first spike in our 16 products, so the vacuum cleaner, the microwave oven and the washing machine all jumped up in price somewhere between 30 and 60 dollars in the course of one week,” Raymond said. “It’s very clear now that appliances is one of the areas where we’re going to see the first shifts in price.”
When asked where consumers are likely to feel the pinch the most, Raymond responded, “With the appliances, I think electronics are likely to be hit. There’s already some indication from Open Brand that TVs and sound bars have increased in price; they saw increases in outdoor cooking equipment like barbeque grills and grill items.”
This creates a quandary for consumers. Traditionally, big sales on grills and outdoor gear occur as summer wanes, so should consumers wait or buy now? Raymond says that’s extremely hard to predict.
“But you know, again, I don’t want to make too many big pronouncements because that’s why we’re trying to look at this day to day, and we’re trying like everybody else figure out what’s happening. And that’s why we put this tracker together,” he said.
