Speaking from the G7 summit in Canada, the leaders confirmed that deal had been finalised, with Trump telling reporters “it’s done”.
But the deal did not contain any agreement on lowering tariffs to 0 per cent – which had been a crucial sticking point.
“We’re gonna let you have that information in little while,” Trump said when asked by reporters about steel tariffs.
The UK is the only country to have secured the agreement with the US to lower the levies slapped on imports.
Starmer also said the Aukus nuclear submarine agreement is “very important” to both the US and the UK and is proceeding despite Washington announcing it was reviewing the pact.

Trump also mistakenly said he had signed a “trade agreement with the European Union”.
Starmer was expected to use the meeting with Macron press for a returns deal with France after telling reporters the issue of Channel boat crossings was high on his agenda.
Starmer had informal drinks with European leaders, and Canadian PM Mark Carney, on Sunday evening – ahead of President Trump’s arrival later in the night.
Sources said the group chatted over a glass of wine – with no officials present – about creating a unifying approach to the Middle East and the strategy for the summit.
A spokesperson for Starmer said he had “raised the UK’s world-leading work on people smuggling sanctions, adding that he looked forward to working with other European countries on this approach.”
At the start of talks, Meloni thanked the UK for being “very clear” in its stance on people-smuggling and said she was “very happy about all of our cooperation on migration”.
No10 said the two prime ministers agreed it was imperative for G7 leaders to forge a path to de-escalation through diplomacy during the summit.
“They reiterated their enduring support for Ukraine, agreeing that it is a topic of our common security that they looked forward to discussing in the next two days,” the spokesman added.
