Trump’s thin skin is dragging the US into wider war with Iran ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

On Sunday, the White House claimed that Trump had personally rejected an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The disclosure was a surprise, given that the President insisted on Saturday that “the US had nothing to do” with Israel’s attack on Iran. It is unclear why senior White House officials quietly released the information regarding Khamenei.

Reuters reported that Trump counselled against Khamenei’s assassination on the basis that Iran was not pursuing Americans. But that argument runs counter to the administration’s public insistence that Israel is uniquely tied to the United States thanks to the 700,000 US citizens who live there, and who are directly within Iran’s firing line as the military exchanges continue. On Sunday night, shockwaves from Iranian missiles caused “minor damage” to the US embassy in Jerusalem, further underscoring the risk that Trump may yet be drawn into the conflict.

But hours later, he called for the warring parties to find common ground at peace talks that he suggested could be modelled on a recent agreement that he claims helped to defuse conflict between India and Pakistan over the disputed region of Kashmir. He claimed that in that case he had used “TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion and sanity into the talks…Likewise we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran!”

Trump’s call for peace talks between Israel and Iran came on the very day that the Iranians scuppered planned discussions with US officials in Oman. The President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff was due to meet Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi for a fresh round of talks about Tehran’s nuclear programme. But in light of Israel’s military action, Iran cancelled the meeting and says there will be no more talks until the conflict is over.

Some Trump supporters argue the President can still pull peace out of the ashes of conflict. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in an appearance on Saudi-funded Al Arabiya News, said on Friday that “if you negotiate and continue to impose costs on your adversary you have more leverage and more opportunity to convince them of the basic thing that we asked the Iranians to do. We haven’t asked them to turn cartwheels or do something crazy. We’ve just said ‘behave like a normal nation’”.

Trump, who sees so many foreign policy problems as being no more complex than the property deals he has been making all his life, now finds those tantalising Iranian business opportunities receding from view. As a result of his muddled messaging, America may now be closer to the prospect of being drawn into a wider regional war.
