Latakia – Shaaban Shamieh
Latakia governorate has recently witnessed a relative improvement in electricity supply hours, reaching four hours per day, which some residents have considered a positive change compared to previous years and months, as the supply duration did not exceed two hours per day during the peak months of summer and winter due to malfunctions and increased loads.
The General Director of the Electricity Company in Latakia governorate, Mohammad al-Hakeem, denied the existence of discrimination in the distribution of electrical current between areas of the governorate, stating that all areas are supplied according to unified rationing programs, determined based on the available electric supply quantities.
Al-Hakeem confirmed in a statement on June 12 that fairness in distribution is one of the basic principles that the institution adheres to in all technical and service departments, noting that there are some exceptional cases that fall outside the unified program.
The areas exempted, according to the statement, include the Slanfeh area, which receives electricity around the clock due to its connection to the special supply line for the Jorin water pumps, which are a vital facility that cannot have its current cut.
It also included some residential lines that pass through service government institutions, and these cases require the implementation of a manual rationing program to ensure the continuity of work in those institutions. The morning and evening rationing hours are combined into one period, achieving fairness in distribution for other subscribers on the same line.
This statement came after complaints were received by the institution about the lack of fairness in the distribution of electricity. Some of these complaints were noted by Enab Baladi on social media, which included criticism of certain areas in Latakia receiving more electricity supply hours than others, in addition to the absence of fixed schedules for electricity supply.
Citizens in Latakia have called on the electricity company to announce a formal electricity rationing distribution schedule to dispel any doubts in a governorate witnessing irregularity in supply hours and timings.
On May 29, the Syrian Ministry of Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with the global “Investments” group to enhance investment opportunities in the energy sector, amounting to seven billion US dollars.
The Qatari company “UCC Concession” will take on the role of the main developer in the agreement, along with the Turkish companies “Kalyon GES Enerji Yatirimlari” and “Cengiz Enerji,” and the American company “Power International USA.”
Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir stated that the investment value under the memorandum of understanding is seven billion US dollars and will contribute to generating five thousand megawatts, which will enhance the number of electricity supply hours, positively reflecting on all aspects of life.
Al-Bashir explained that the agreement includes the development of four gas turbine power plants operating in combined cycle (CCGT) in the areas of Deir Ezzor, Mhardeh, Zeyzoun in Hama countryside, and Trifawi in Homs countryside, with a total generation capacity estimated at about 4000 megawatts, using American and European technologies, in addition to a solar power plant with a capacity of 1000 megawatts in the Wadi al-Rabi area in southern Syria.
