DRIVERS could risk $1,000 fines and a driving ban after a new rule comes into effect on July 1.

In an attempt to crackdown on speeding and improve road safety, drivers could face stricter penalties.

This includes having to appear before a judge who could sentence reckless motorists to 90 days in jail, and an $1,000 fine.

It applies to drivers who are caught driving more than 100 miles per hour, or over 50 miles per hour above the limit.

Florida’s new state law comes into effect on July 1 and aims to reduce dangerous driving.

First-time offenders could face 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

This increases to 90 days in jail and an $1,000 fine for repeat offenders.

Officials have also warned that those who re-offend within five years could have their license suspended for one year.

Representative of R-Hillsborough County, Danny Alvarez, told WCJB: “It’s just not enough to pull someone over and give them a ticket. It’s not working anymore.

“We’re not trying to be the Debby Downers. What we’re trying to do is make sure you stay safe when you get in the car.”

It comes after state law enforcement issued over 683,000 speeding tickets in 2023 – with nearly 2,600 of those exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 mph.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said: “If you get into a crash going over 100 mph, you’re not going to survive that.

“The people you strike aren’t going to survive that.”

He is optimistic that the new law will encourage drivers to be safer on the road.

Mina added: “Really, there’s no reason, ever, to go over 100 mph.”

Other state lawmakers were less enthusiastic about the new rule.

Anna Eskamani said: “Statistically speaking, there is no clear data demonstrate that enhanced penalties reduce crime.

“We need to be honest about that, and pursue alternative policy concepts to reduce crime in the first place.”

Florida is just one of several states introducing new laws to crackdown on reckless behaviour behind the wheel.

In Washington, those caught driving dangerously will be forced to install a device on their car after legislation comes into effect in 2029.

The intelligent speed assistance devices will track the driver’s speed and prevent them from passing the legal speed limit.

A similar law in Virginia has been passed that comes into effect in May 2026.

Lawmakers hope it will be a more sustainable alternative to license suspension.

Those who interfere with the devices could face jail time.
