ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Red Wings are wrapping up their fourth annual Intentional Walk, a tradition where members of the organization and community walk to raise money for local non-profits. This Saturday, one organization got a special experience at Innovative Field.

From Tuesday to Sunday, at all hours of the day, someone has been walking the warning track at Innovative Field.

“I think that’s one of the cooler tie-ins is that we’ve gotten some of the coaches involved, front office members, but also fans have also participated in this too,” said Josh Whetzel, the play-by-play broadcaster for the Red Wings.

Proceeds go to a few non-profits around town, but one organization got to walk around the bases for themselves.

“Coming here and playing at Innovative Field, it’s a tremendous feeling that the kids have to be in the big house,” said Mike Myers, the Coordinator of Westside Challenger Baseball.

Challenger Baseball allows kids with physical and intellectual challenges a chance to have their own league. On Saturday, they got to swing for the fences at Innovative Field.

“Challenger Baseball League is one of the most worthy charities that we probably work with so I think it’s cool that the proceeds are going toward that,” said Whetzel.

“They do amazing work and this is a great way to give back to those kids and make their experience more enjoyable,” said Red Wings General Manager, Dan Mason.

From the looks on their faces, this was a moment to remember for a lifetime.

“It’s really a highlight of their career here to play in the big house,” said Myers.

As the kids that are a part of the Challenger Baseball leagues in the Rochester area got to run around on a Triple A field, the Red Wings are just happy to make sure everyone has the chance to swing a bat, catch a pop fly, or just intentionally walk to first.

“As the Red Wings always say, community is in the middle name, Rochester community baseball,” said Whetzel.

“Rochester’s a very generous community and every time we do our Intentional Walk or other activities here where we’re trying to raise funds for some of our partners in the not-for-profit world, people respond,” said Mason.
