Rory McIlroy’s emotions were on full display during his second round at the US Open.

The five-time Major winner made the cut by just two strokes at Oakmont after ending Friday six-over-par for the week.

McIlroy secured his progress to the weekend with a birdie on the 18th hole after a frustrating back nine.

It came after he had furiously thrown a club after a wayward approach shot on the 12th.

His anger was once again on display several holes later as the difficulty of the course got to the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy flung his club to the floor on the 17th, inadvertently smashing the tee box.

Sky Sports commentator Nick Dougherty was stunned by the 36-year-old’s outburst.

Reacting live on air, he said: “Oh wow. Frustration once again boils over. He’s not himself right now.”

Despite his frustrations, McIlroy ended with a two-over 72 on Friday to end the day nine shots off the leader Sam Burns.

However, his post-round silence with the media continued as he refused to speak with the press for the sixth consecutive time at majors.

He is set to tee off at 3.34pm BST on Saturday alongside Xander Schauffele.

Several other big names were less fortunate when it came to dropping below the seven-over cut line.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut by three shots after finishing 10-over.

Meanwhile, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood were also amongst the notable players to fall short.

McIlroy is still aiming to recapture the form which saw him complete the career Grand Slam earlier this year.

His victory at the Masters in April ended an 11-year wait for a fifth Major win.

He followed that triumph up by finishing tied for 47th at the PGA Championship last month.

McIlroy begins the third round in a tie for 45th along with 11 other players.

It is 14 years since his only previous US Open win at Congressional in 2011.

As for his past performances at Oakmont, he was amongst the field when the course last hosted the event in 2016.

On that occasion, he failed to make the cut after shooting eight-over through the opening two rounds.
