Father Joe’s Villages has begun a campaign to raise $250,000 by the end of 2025 for their diversion program, according to a press release.

The organization hears from far too many people who fell into homelessness after missing a single rent payment, according to Deacon Jim Vargas, the organization’s president and CEO.

“We end homelessness not just by helping people leave the streets behind, but by ensuring no one is ever put into that position in the first place,” he said in the release.

The David C. Copley Foundation will match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000.

Father Joe’s Villages’ diversion program secures alternative housing options for individuals on the cusp on homelessness.

The program also provides rental assistance and other forms of support to recent entrants into the shelter system.

Byron Kimball, a public relations representative working on behalf of Father Joe’s Villages, said via email that alternative forms of support for people facing homelessness can include a plane ticket to live with a relative or groceries for a friend who agrees to take them in.

He said that Father Joe’s Villages determines rental assistance on a case-by-case basis, depending on household income and the cost of keeping the individual housed.

“We have provided diversion support for a long time,” Kimball said. “Our focus on funding diversion is what’s growing and we hope that this campaign will allow us to increase the level of support we’re able to give.”

According to Father Joe’s, preventing someone from entering the shelter system can save taxpayers thousands of dollars. On average, supporting a homeless person for a year costs taxpayers upwards of $50,000.

According to the San Diego Housing Commission, shelters for families and single adults, as well as harm reduction shelters, all had 95% or higher occupancy rates in March — the most recent month with available data.
