A Weld County woman will spend five years in prison after being sentenced for a fatal hit and run of a man riding a bicycle on 8th Avenue in Greeley in December 2023.
Ana Caren Romero, of Gilcrest, was sentenced by Weld County District Court Judge Anita Crowther on Thursday afternoon to five years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. Romero’s sentence is one year less than the maximum allowed under law, according to a news release from the Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

Not long after midnight Dec. 4, 2023, Romero hit and killed Michael Wallen was he riding his bike in the 2300 block of 8th Avenue in Greeley.
Romero did not stop at the scene or attempt to provide aid to Wallen, the district attorney’s office noted in its release. Attorneys previously said Romero had her 5-year-old son in the vehicle with her and continued to a drive-thru at McDonald’s.
“There’s nothing more serious than when someone is killed,” Deputy District Attorney Katherine Fitzgerald said in the news release. “Michael Wallen is no longer with us because of the choices she made that night.”
Greeley Police Department Traffic Unit officers processed the scene and recovered debris identified as coming from a Jeep Grand Cherokee between the years 2017-2021.
Romero’s attorney contacted police later in the day, noting Romero’s vehicle had been involved in a crash and was at her home. Greeley officers went to Romero’s address and confirmed a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee matched video and eyewitness descriptions.
The vehicle was registered to Romero and had front-end damage and paint transfer that appeared to match Wallen’s bike.
