WARREN — A Masury man accused of fatally shooting his sister is set to face trial in September, according to court records.
John Zanolli, 61, of Third Street, appeared in court Wednesday on charges of aggravated murder with firearm specifications and fifth-degree abuse of a corpse In the death of his sister, Janice Zanolli, 65.
He was arraigned in March before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean O’Brien. Zanolli’s bond was set at $2 million during that hearing.
He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing July 9, with a trial date set for Sept. 9. Zanolli was initially arrested and held without bond after an earlier arraignment in Eastern District Court in Brookfield.
According to a Brookfield police report, officers responded to a welfare check request at the siblings’ shared Third Street home around 10:15 a.m. March 1 after family members reported not hearing from Janice Zanolli for several days. Police found Janice dead from a shotgun wound to the head. John Zanolli was discovered in another room, holding a rifle to his head and threatening suicide, leading to a brief standoff. After 30 minutes of negotiations, officers used stun guns to subdue him and secure the firearm, according to Brookfield police Chief Aaron Kasiewicz.
Zanolli allegedly told police he shot his sister Feb. 26 and remained in the house with her body until March 1, which prompted the abuse of a corpse charge.
Police suggest family tensions, including a dispute over their late father’s estate, may have contributed to the incident. F. Patrick Zanolli, 91, a former Brookfield Local School District teacher, died in September, and the siblings were probating his estate, which included the Third Street home.
