Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois’ undercard is shaping up nicely.
Two fights have been added to the Wembley Stadium bill on July 19, including a mouth-watering heavyweight clash between Kevin Lerena and Lawrence Okolie.
Dubois dropped Lerena three times back in 2022GETTYLerena (31-3) is the reigning WBC bridgerweight world champion and famously dropped Dubois three times in the opening stanza when they squared off in December 2022.
Dubois made a miraculous comeback to stop the South African in round three, but the serious scare saw Lerena’s stock increase tenfold.
Last March, he also had Justis Huni on shaky legs when they duke it out in Saudi Arabia, but he was unable to put the punches together to finish the job.
He will be hoping he can go one step further against Okolie in a quick turnaround after successfully defending his WBC bridgerweight title in May against Serhiy Radchenko.
Okolie (21-2) preceded Lerena as WBC bridgerweight champion before moving up to boxing’s glamour division last year.
He also previously held the WBO cruiserweight title between 2021 and 2023 before he was dethroned by Chris Billam-Smith in the sole blemish of his career.
‘The Sauce’ made quick work of Hussein Muhamed last December in his heavyweight debut and will now take a good step up in competition against Lerena in fight number two.
Elsewhere on the undercard, British and Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Lewis Edmondson will face Usyk’s undefeated training partner Daniel Lapin.
Edmondson (11-0) picked up the British and Commonwealth belts in only his tenth professional fight by defeating Dan Azeez via majority decision.
He defended his Commonwealth belt against Oluwatosin Kejawa in March and will now face Lapin in a non-title fight.
Usyk and Dubois are meeting for a second time on July 19Getty Lerena takes on Okolie on the undercardLapin (11-0) comes from a credentialed amateur background where he won seven national Ukrainian titles and a bronze medal at the European Championships.
He has turned heads on several of Usyk’s undercards as a pro and will look to continue that trend next month.
More fights are expected to be added to Usyk and Dubois’ undercard in the coming days.
The heavyweight titans are due to square off for the undisputed heavyweight crown in the main event, two years removed from their controversial inaugural encounter.
Back in August 2023, when they met for the first time in Wroclaw, Poland, Usyk knocked out Dubois in the ninth round.
However, the Ukrainian slickster was dropped by a blow in the fifth frame that divided fans.
Usyk’s teammate Lapin takes on Edmondson as wellSome claimed the punch that floored Usyk for several minutes was a legal body shot.
Meanwhile, others were insistent that it had strayed low.
Ultimately, the referee declared it was an illegal shot and gave Usyk four minutes to recover before he rebounded to stop ‘Triple D’ with a stiff jab.
