The heat alert – issued by the UK Health Security Agency – comes into force from 9pm on Thursday, covering the East of England, East Midlands, London and the South East, where temperatures exceed 30°C. It runs until 8am on Sunday.
The Met Office has also issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Thunderstorms are then expected to develop across parts of England and Wales during the afternoon.
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said: “Our findings show that even moderate heat can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.
“If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.”
