PENFIELD, N.Y. – Despite facing some pretty heavy adversity, Penfield boy’s lacrosse finds themselves in the New York state tournament semifinals.
“At first you’re kind of like oh crap what are you gonna do? Then you realize sometimes there’s a silver lining to that,” said Penfield boy’s lacrosse head coach John Schembri.
Some of the adversity was unavoidable, players getting sick and a few starters suffering season ending injuries. But after an 0-5 start to the season, most teams would’ve thrown in the towel. Penfield didn’t.
“No one’s ever given up in a game. There’s some games, some tough losses that we had, but if you watch the tape on them, we never gave up in a single moment,” said junior AJ Theodorakakos.
“We live by the motto, good, so whenever we deal with adversity, sit there say good, move on, deal with it, and play the next moment,” said junior Brodie Joyce.
And because they didn’t, they find themselves two wins away from a state championship. On Wednesday, they’ll play West Genesee, a team they lost to at the start of the season. But they’ve been in this same situation before – a few times.
“I think it all started with Fairport actually. We lost to Fairport the first time, we beat them. We lost to McQuaid last year, then we beat them. Now with Orchard Park, they beat us earlier in the season, we beat them. West Genny beat us earlier in the season…” said Schembri.
So can Penfield boy’s lacrosse do it a fourth time? We’ll have to wait and see come Wednesday night. But this team truly believes the old saying about being a close knit team is not a cliche for the Patriots.
“I would do anything for any of my brothers on this team. I call them my brothers, I don’t call them my teammates. If one of them were to call me 20 years down the road saying hey I need your help, I would help them. I just feel like we have a tighter bond than most teams do,” said junior Mason Schembri.
Penfield hopes that their story is a little bit different from the usual. They are just two wins away from becoming the latest team to join that short list of state tournament champions for the Patriots.
