Rhett Lashlee has felt the full force of Alabama fans’ wrath during his head coaching career.
Lashlee led SMU to a College Football Playoff berth in his 3rd season with the Mustangs. The Mustangs got in despite losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Right below SMU in the final Playoff rankings at No. 11? Alabama.
For what it’s worth, it’s not the first time Lashlee has found himself on the bitter end of the Tide’s emotions. Neither Alabama nor Auburn fans will forget the infamous Kick-Six game of 2013 that denied Bama a spot in the SEC Championship Game and, ultimately, the BCS National Championship. The play was recently ranked as college football’s top moment of the 2000s so far by ESPN.
The Tigers’ offensive coordinator? Rhett Lashlee, who eventually realized the irony of the situation after SMU learned that it’d be in the playoff.
“Obviously, that morning when we got the news, it was really special. Pretty cool for my family, our staff, and our team,” Lashlee said on “The Next Round”. “I kinda figured out shortly that I’m not sure if I was a more disliked person in the state of Alabama then or after the Kick-Six. Either way, we were in and I was good with it.”
One wonders if there will be a SMU vs. Alabama game on the schedule in the coming year.
