Michelle Aguirre was tapped to fill in as the county of Orange’s top exec after Frank Kim’s retirement last year and after a national search, the Board of Supervisors named her the permanent CEO on Tuesday, June 10.
The board is expected to consider her employment contract at its June 24 meeting, but approved the appointment during a closed session on Tuesday.
Chairman of the board Fourth District Supervisor Doug Chaffee said Aguirre expects to have the role for only one year.
“If she wanted to stay longer we would have given her a longer contract,” Chaffee said.
Chaffee called her an excellent choice for the job and said the supervisors would have given her the role sooner had she had the interest early on. Chaffee said Aguirre needed to be persuaded to stay on longer as she is at retirement age for a public employee.”
“She knows everything inside and out,” Chaffee said “and before that has done an excellent job as the chief financial officer. She plays it by the book and straight.
“Her job performance has been stellar,” he added. “If she had wanted the job before all the recruitment, she would have been the unanimous choice.”
The supervisors were meeting on Tuesday to discuss the more than $10 billion budget Aguirre will oversee as CEO. The county employs more than 18,000 people and provides community services ranging from public health to regional parks, county public works to law enforcement.
