Golf’s third Major of the year, the US Open, gets underway at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday and there are no shortage of contenders for one of the most coveted titles in the sport.
Rory McIlroy won The Masters to complete the career Grand Slam in April, but he was affected by driver problems when world number one Scottie Scheffler claimed PGA Championship glory in May.
Bryson DeChambeau held off McIlroy and Tony Finau to win the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst and the American appears to be in good shape to defend his title in Pennsylvania.
Scheffler arrives at Oakmont as the clear man to beat, fresh off a third Major title and with three wins in his last four starts.
The American’s combination of accuracy, poise, and all-round ball striking makes him the ante-post favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday, but the betting value could lie elsewhere.

LIV Virginia betting tips
Jon Rahm to win @ 14/1 (BOOSTED FROM 11/1) Matt Fitzpatrick – Top English Player @ 15/2 Ludvig Åberg to win and E/W @ 25/1Rahm is due another Major moment
Oakmont, with its lightning-fast greens and punishing rough, will expose any weakness, and that is why Scheffler tops the outright betting.
The American has very few weaknesses in his game and the sort of consistency to chip away at the lead if he is not heading the field himself.
Jon Rahm is another player with similar traits. The Spaniard was tied-12th and tied-10th in his last two US Open starts and finished T8, two shots off second place, at Quail Hollow in last month’s US PGA.
Rahm, who has the third-best stroke average in the US Open (2019-24) of this week’s starters, has recorded 21 consecutive top 10s since he joined the LIV Golf league in 2024.
And his putter appears to be getting hot again, as he made five birdies and an eagle in the final round of LIV Golf Virginia last weekend.
The 30-year-old tamed Torrey Pines to land his first Major at the 2021 US Open and claimed the Green Jacket at Augusta two years ago.
Rahm is due another Major bid and his form coming into this event with three top-10s and a top-five in his last four starts suggests a bold showing could come this week.
Fitzpatrick can fly the flag for England
Matt Fitzpatrick’s form took a nosedive in 2024, but the 2022 US Open winner is looking more and more like his old self again.
He briefly contended during the final round of the PGA Championship last month before finishing tied-sixth.
The Sheffield-born star held off Scheffler to win around Brookline, which is an equally demanding venue to Oakmont, and he might be able to keep his nose in front of the other Englishmen teeing it up this week.
That number includes Tommy Fleetwood, who finished 21st at Quail Hollow and 16th on his last start at The Memorial.
Meanwhile, Tyrrell Hatton finished 15th on his only start since slumping to 60th place at the PGA Championship and Aaron Rai has missed his last two cuts on the PGA Tour.
Ice cool Aberg to contend again
After bursting onto the scene last year, Ludvig Aberg has continued his fantastic start to his professional career and he landed his second PGA Tour title at the Genesis Invitational in February – an event that was played at Torrey Pines.
The young Swede’s length and composure under pressure could see him contend at Oakmont, especially if he can avoid the big numbers that often derail rookies on this devilishly difficult track.
Aberg was tied-12th on his US Open debut last year, evidence of his affinity for playing courses that are set up difficult.
