Bad injuries are an occupational hazard for mixed martial arts fighters.
However, few are more grisly than the one James Thompson sustained against Kimbo Slice.
UFC Fight PassSlice burst Thompson’s ear with a big right hand[/caption]Slice – real name Kevin Ferguson – rose to prominence in the mid-2000s when videos of his unsanctioned street fights took the internet by storm.
His violent knockout victories amassed millions of views online and paved the way for a lucrative career in MMA.
After submitting former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer in an exhibition bout, Slice turned over as a professional with rising promotion Elite XC.
er boy of Scott Coker’s new company got off to a flying start, knocking out Bo Cantrell and UFC pioneer Tank Abbott inside the opening minute of his first two bouts.
For his third outing, he was matched up with well-travelled British heavyweight James Thompson in what proved to be a much harder task.
Thompson shot in for a takedown early and had Slice on his back for the first time in his career within 40 seconds.
Slice eventually managed to get back to his feet, and when he did, he returned the favour.
Thompson threatened with a kimura off his back, but Slice defended the submission and saw out the bell.
In the second round, Slice managed to rock Thompson with a big left hook, but the Brit weathered the storm to take down Slice once again.
By this point, both men were exhausted, and although Thompson was raining down ground and pound from the top, he didn’t have the lung capacity to close the show.
UFC Fight PassThompson got the better of the grappling exchanges before the finish[/caption]Heading into the third and final frame, Slice sensed he needed a stoppage to win.
Summoning up every last ounce of strength, Slice uncorked a clubbing right hand that burst Thompson’s cauliflower ear.
With blood streaming down his face, Thompson shot in for a desperate takedown attempt, but he was stuffed by an invigorated Slice, who swung for the fences in pursuit of the knockout.
During the sequence, he landed several hard right hands, including a hook that knocked Thompson onto unsteady legs.
As Thompson stumbled backwards against the cage, referee Dan Miragliotta took one look at his ear and waved off the fight.
The stoppage evoked an angry response from Thompson, who palmed Miragliotta in the face, and there was enough controversy surrounding the fight for a rematch to be made eight years later.
UFC Fight PassSlice was pushed to his limits[/caption]Both men were due to run it back in the main event of Bellator 158 at London’s O2 Arena on July 16, 2016.
However, Slice died from sudden heart failure on June 6 at the age of just 42-years-old.
