Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, Dhiman Chakma, Sub-Collector of Dharamgarh, Kalahandi district, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,00,000 from a local businessman.
The incident occurred at his official government residence in Dharamgarh, where Chakma allegedly demanded the amount as an installment of a total Rs. 20,00,000 bribe, threatening to take action against the businessman’s enterprise if the payment was not made.
Chakma received the bribe, verified 26 bundles of 100 currency notes of various denominations with both hands, and stored the cash in his office table drawer at the residence.
Chemical tests conducted on his hands and the drawer confirmed a positive reaction, solidifying evidence of the transaction.
Following the arrest, the Vigilance sleuths conducted searches at Chakma’s official residence, recovering an additional Rs. 47 lakh in cash.
The Vigilance has registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended by the P.C. (Amendment) Act, 2018, under PS Case No. 6/2025.
The investigation is ongoing, with further details expected as the case progresses.
