Szafnauer endorses ‘great racer’ Perez for return to F1 ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

In the ever-evolving world of Formula 1, where drivers face relentless scrutiny and careers can pivot on a single season, Sergio Perez finds himself at a crossroads.

After a challenging 2024 campaign that saw him lose his seat with Red Bull, the Mexican driver is eyeing a return to the sport, with rumors swirling about a potential move to the new Cadillac team for 2026.

While some question whether Perez can recapture the form that made him a six-time Grand Prix winner, one key figure from his past is unequivocal in his support: former team principal Otmar Szafnauer.

Having worked closely with Perez for over six years at Force India/Racing Point, Szafnauer is adamant that the 35-year-old driver has what it takes to make a successful return to the F1 grid.

Under the American team manager’s leadership, Perez enjoyed some of his most consistent years in the sport, culminating in his maiden Formula 1 victory with Racing Point at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

A Champion of Perez’s Return

Reflecting on Perez’s potential comeback, Szafnauer offered a glowing endorsement of the Mexican’s abilities and character.

"Should Checo be back? He's good enough, yes," Szafnauer told Formula.Hu.

"When he drove for me, he had all the fighting spirit, the qualities, the skills. I think he had that at the beginning of Red Bull as well.

“Towards the end, maybe he took his eye off the ball a little bit, but let's not forget that he was up against Max.”

Indeed, the challenge of competing alongside a dominant figure like Verstappen has proven formidable for every single one of the Dutchman’s teammates, and Szafnauer was quick to highlight Perez’s strengths – particularly in areas where he consistently excelled during his earlier career.

“He's a great racer, he rarely makes mistakes, and he's great on the tyre management,” said the former Aston Martin and Alpine chief.

“Those are his strengths. His weaknesses? I mean, I wasn't at Red Bull, but when he was with us, he was really, really good.”

Asked whether Perez, with his experience, could successfully re-enter the sport, Szafnauer offered a confident verdict.

“I think for a guy like Checo, with all that experience behind him, it's not that hard to make a comeback, not that hard at all.” As the 2026 season approaches and Cadillac prepares to join the F1 grid, Szafnauer’s comments will hopefully add momentum to Perez’s candidacy for a return.

With the backing of a respected former boss and a proven track record in the midfield, the door to Formula 1 may not be fully closed for Sergio Perez just yet.
