We loved all of these tips and are planning to use some of them this summer. They're also great jumping-off points for building your perfect burger bar.

How to Build a Burger Bar

If you have a board big enough to accommodate your crowd, you can put out everything together, as Brown does. If not, you can separate patties, toppings and condiments on separate plates and platters.

Have a mix of regular, whole wheat and gluten-free buns, or lettuce wraps for low-carb eaters. Toasting the buns lightly on the grill or heating them on an outdoor griddle with some butter elevates everything.

The toppings are where the burger bar shines, though! Go beyond lettuce and tomato and offer sliced pickles (sweet and dill), red onion and caramelized onions, avocado or guacamole, jalapeños and anything else you can think of. One thought: Maybe make a batch of bacon in the morning and set it out on the burger bar.

And, of course, no burger is complete without condiments. Ketchup, mustard, mayo and BBQ sauce are a give, but also consider condiments like hot sauce, ranch and specialty sauces like chipotle mayo, sriracha aioli and chili crisp.

2. Control the temperature

Use a muffin tin over ice for toppings that need to stay chilled, like avocado or mayo-based slaws. For hot items, like caramelized onions or mushrooms, a small crockpot or insulated dish works wonders. Pre-wrap buns in foil to warm on the grill in batches. This keeps them soft and toasty.

3. Be creative

A burger bar is customizable and perfect for feeding a crowd without breaking a sweat. Plus, it turns your cookout into a choose-your-own-adventure meal that even picky eaters get excited about. So fire up the grill, set out the fixings and let the burger building begin!
