Arizona Diamondbacks veteran starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez came off the injured list to start Friday’s game at the Cincinnati Reds.
The club optioned Tommy Henry to Triple-A Reno after he threw 71 pitches in relief in Thursday’s win over the Atlanta Braves.
Rodriguez last started on May 14 before landing on the 15-day IL with left shoulder inflammation.
Rodriguez was pretty decent for the D-backs through his first five starts this season, throwing to an ERA of 4.40 but with a FIP (fielding-independent pitching) of 2.81. Defensive mishaps and inherited runners scoring harmed his numbers early on, but he did a nice job keeping the team in games.
That turned in his last four starts, when he allowed 21 earned runs in 16 innings to raise his season ERA to 7.05. Command struggles put him in tough spots, and the extent to which his sore shoulder impacted those performances is unknown.
Rodriguez pitched 4.2 innings in the Arizona Complex League last Friday and got up to 73 pitches.
He is in the second season of a four-year, $80 million contract.
His return initially bumped Ryne Nelson back to the bullpen, where the D-backs planned to use him as a higher-leverage weapon at some point. Corbin Burnes landing on the IL with right elbow inflammation forced the D-backs to put Nelson back in the rotation. Nelson has made three starts this year, pitching 16 innings with three earned runs.
D-backs-Reds weekend rotation with Rodriguez back
The D-backs will face Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo on Friday, followed by right-handers Nick Martinez and Brady Singer, respectively. After Rodriguez’s return on Friday, Nelson will start Saturday’s game. Zac Gallen will get the finale on Sunday.
The Reds enter the matchup 30-33 after losing four of their last five games.
