The project will make the line double-track, and will involve the reconstruction of 18 bridges as well as the 496m-long Rachitoberg Tunnel. It will also build a 1,279m twin-track tunnel and upgrade six stations.
The line will also be fitted with upgraded power and signalling systems.
Karl-Heinz Strauss, Porr’s chief executive, said: “This project will contribute to improving the flow of traffic and increasing safety along the Orient/East-Med corridor.
“It will cut travel time, increase transport capacity and bring the national infrastructure up to European standards for speed and safety.”
Construction is due to be completed on the section in 60 months’ time.
