Shubman Gill at par with Virat Kohli before captaincy, real test starts from England series ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

Even though Shubman Gill has been made the Test skipper, starting the England series upon the retirement of Rohit Sharma, it is beyond doubt that he has big shoes to fill. Many, for some reason ,have started also comparing Gill’s Test career to that of Virat Kohli’s, and it is only a matter of time, the world knows if he can equal or better the latter’s numbers.

Shubman Gill vs Virat Kohli

But the starting point couldn’t be more similar. When Virat Kohli took full-time captaincy in 2014 in Australia — his numbers weren’t as impressive, as they turned out to be from there on. In the 51 Test innings Kohli had played till then, he had gone on to score 1855 runs at an average of 39.46, including 6 tons.

Here is Shubman Gill, almost on par with the legend, having scored 1893 runs in 59 innings at an average of 35.05, including 5 hundreds. As for Virat, he became a different beast, when he took over the captaincy. In 113 innings as a skipper, he scored 5864 runs at an average of 54.80 with 20 tons. Numbers, which could be difficult for anyone to replicate, let alone Gill.

Real Test Starts from England Series

If one talks about the captaincy record, Virat is the most successful Indian. In 68 Tests, he led India, he went on to win 40, and lose just 17. He had a staggering win% of 58.82. So, this is a massive opportunity for the new captain.

Till now, he has shone in patches, but the talent is immense, and the chance even greater. If he can manage to succeed, Team India could be looking at a long-term solution to their batting woes, which have plagued the team in the last 4-5 years. The most recent instance was the Aussie series, where, barring Yashasvi Jaiswal – 391 runs, all the other batters failed. Gill himself was poor and got 93 in three matches, at an average of 18.60. So, it is actually a now-or-never moment for the 25-year-old.
