If there’s one team you can’t count out in the fourth quarter, regardless of the deficit, it’s the Indiana Pacers.
The Oklahoma City Thunder learned that the hard way on Thursday night, as the Pacers staged a 15-point fourth-quarter comeback for a 111-110 win in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
It came from none other than Tyrese Haliburton, as he nailed a deep two-pointer with 0.3 seconds left to give Indiana a one-point lead — their only lead of the game.
The game looked all but over with nine minutes to go in the fourth. Thunder forward Jalen Williams intercepted a pass from T.J. McConnell, ran the floor to finish an open dunk, and built the Thunder’s lead up to 15.
But no lead is safe against the Pacers, who have already staged four 15-point comebacks this post-season. Aurora, Ont. native Andrew Nembhard drilled a clutch three-pointer with two minutes to go, Pascal Siakam grabbed an offensive rebound and finished a put-back with 48 seconds left, then Haliburton called game with his clutch make.
Haliburton finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while five other Pacers finished with double-digit points. Eastern Conference Finals MVP Pascal Siakam led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pacers pulled off the massive upset — on the road, no less — despite losing the turnover battle 24-6. They turned it over 19 times in the first half alone.
But the Thunder weren’t able to keep their foot on the gas pedal, as those turnovers didn’t turn into enough points and their offence went cold.
MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with a game-high 38 points, but did so on less-than-ideal efficiency, shooting 14-of-30 from the field. Centre Chet Holmgren couldn’t get it going as he finished with six points and six rebounds on two-of-nine shooting.
