Aryna Sabalenka has beaten reigning champion Iga Swiatek to reach her first ever French Open final.
The Australian Open runner-up won 7-6 [7-1] 4-6 6-0 on Thursday to end her opponent’s chances of a record fourth consecutive title.
Sabalenka ended Swiatek’s French Open reignGettySabalenka had won just four of her last 12 meetings against the Polish star prior to their clash on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
But a dominant third set performance ensured she will play in the final on Saturday against Coco Gauff, who beat Lois Boisson 6-1 6-2.
The win also brought an end to Swiatek’s 26-match unbeaten run at Roland Garros, which delivered three titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Sabalenka, who has won three Grand Slams, is into her sixth major final and second of the year following her Australian Open run.
The Belarusian is currently world no. 1 and will face world no.2 Gauff.
Saturday’s match will be the first women’s singles Grand Slam final to feature the world’s top two players since 2018.
Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki were the respective world no. 1 and 2 at the 2018 Australian Open, which the latter won.
But the last time this occurred at the French Open was 12 years ago.
The then world no. 1 Serena Williams won her second title by beating world no. 2 Maria Sharapova.
Whatever the outcome is this weekend, the French Open will crown a new winner in the women’s singles event.
Sabalenka has had her best ever year at Roland GarrosGetty She will face Gauff in the final as both eye their first French Open titleGettyWhilst Sabalenka makes her final debut, Gauff will arrive there for the second time in her career.
The 21-year-old reached her first Grand Slam singles final in Paris in 2022 but was beaten in straight sets by Swiatek.
Gauff’s American compatriot Madison Keys is the only player to have won a set against her the 2025 French Open.
The same can be said for Swiatek against Sabalenka, who will be one step closer to a career Grand Slam with a win this weekend.
She has already won the Australian and US Opens, but has never been in the final at Wimbledon.
