Some of that money was used to pay for thousands of volunteers in key swing states. In the crucial Pennsylvanian seat, Musk held a lottery in which he gave people $1mn ((£740,000) a day for signing onto Republican causes.
The bill – which Trump has described as his “big beautiful bill” – involves extended tax credits, additional requirements for federal benefits eligibility and an increase to the national debt ceiling.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore, this massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong,” he wrote on X.
“Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than anyone,” he said, “and he only developed a problem when he found out I would cut the EV [electric vehicle] mandate… And it really is unfair.”
