A CAR graveyard has been left floating in the middle of the ocean with thousands of vehicles on board.

A, now abandoned, cargo ship was carrying around 3,000 motors across the seas when it burst into flames.

The ship, The Morning Midas, was on a trip from Yantai, China to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.

Lithium ion batteries, used to power the electric vehicles carried by the ship, are thought to have started the blaze.

A deck carrying 800 of the electric cars started spewing plumes of smoke according to London based operator Zodiac Maritime.

The fire quickly spread out of control and the crew of 22 abandoned ship via lifeboat.

As the 600-foot ship burned three merchant ships alongside the U.S. coast guard were on scene to fight the fire.

Bloomberg reports that the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched aircrews and a cutter to the emergency.

The fleeing crew of The Morning Midas were picked up by the coast guard and transferred to one of the three merchant ships on the scene.

The dramatic incident has left the cargo ship sitting south west of Alaska with 3,000 burned out cars aboard.

With the blaze thought to be put out the ship has been left floating on the sea.

Zodiac Maritime has yet to confirm which brand of car was carried by the cargo ship.

At least 800 electric vehicles were on board and are presumed to have been the cause of the fire.

Around 3,000 cars in total were carried by the cargo ship as it made it’s journey.

70 of the cars carried by The Morning Midas were fully electric while around 680 were hybrids.

It is thought the ship has approximately 350 metric tons of gas fuel and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard.

Fighting electric fires at sea is a difficult operation with tens of thousands of gallons of water required to douse the burning batteries.

Using saltwater to put out lithium ion fires is not an option with the seawater being electrically conductive.

The Morning Midas reportedly activated its Co2 fire suppression system to fight the fire.

After the system was exhausted however the battery blaze started up again.

A cargo ship carrying electric vehicles has previously caught fire at sea.

The Felicity Ace burst into flames in 2022 with a lithium ion battery starting the blaze and the ship sinking as a result.
