The extension brings the line Modi inaugurated in 2021 directly underground to Kanpur Central, the city’s main rail hub.
It now stretches from Kanpur Central to the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) in the city’s northwest.
Work on a further stretch with seven stations to Naubasta in the south is underway.
“A few years ago, our government gifted Kanpur its first metro. Today the Orange Line of Kanpur Metro has reached Kanpur Central. The city now boasts both elevated and underground Metro lines, connecting key parts of the city,” Modi said on 30 May, The Times of India reports.
“Traffic used to be a major issue in Kanpur, and many doubted whether a Metro could be built here. But today we are witnessing the successful operation of an extraordinary project like Kanpur Metro,” the prime minister added.
All 40 of Kanpur’s metro trains were built in India at Alstom’s Savli plant.
Able to run at 80kmph, the trains run automatically, have air conditioning and are equipped with Flexx bogies and a Mitrac propulsion system, which increases energy efficiency through regenerative braking.
Olivier Loison, Alstom India’s managing director, said: “We are committed towards reshaping the transportation landscape of the state. The extended metro service will transform mass mobility in Kanpur and provide a safe, efficient, and sustainable mode of transportation.”
