Dave Allen believes Moses Itauma has the talent but needs more before he gets in the ring for a world title shot.
Ahead of Fabio Wardley‘s heavyweight clash with Justis Huni in Ipswich on June 7, Adam Catterall and Gareth A Davies sat down to discuss their definitive top 10 heavyweight rankings.
Itauma has been urged to face Franklin next to make a good step to world levelDespite being just 20-years-old and heading into his 13th pro bout in July, Itauma secured No.8 and No.10 ranks respectively on their lists.
Itauma’s professional record currently stands at 12-0 with his most recent win against Mike Balogun, 41, in Glasgow.
The Slovak-born Brit dropped his American opponent Bologun three times in two rounds, before ending their heavyweight bout with a TKO.
WBA Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Dave Allen gave his opinion on the young star, when he appeared on the latest episode of talkBOXING.
“I think he’s the real deal, but to go from the opposition he is facing to a Joseph Parker would be irresponsible matchmaking,” he said.
“People are talking about Itauma boxing for a world title soon, he is miles off right now.”
“He can beat anyone in two or three rounds at the moment. But we haven’t seen him go past that yet. I think he’s an incredible prospect, but that’s all he is still,” Allen explained.
Ahead of fighting Demsey McKean in December last year, Itauma had described his clash with the Australian as his ‘world title fight’.
Allen recognised the young heavyweight’s undeniable talent, but remained firmly rooted in his view that he should take a more calculated root to a shot at a world title.
“We haven’t even seen him box for a British title yet. Dempsey McKean is British title level, he shouldn’t be in that conversation for Joseph Parker yet.
Leigh Dawney / QueensberryItauma is hopeful of pushing for titles but Allen thinks he needs to be better matched[/caption]“Not for talent, offensively he is already one of the best heavyweights in the world. But he hasn’t been hit back and hasn’t been hit under pressure.”
Itauma is no stranger to getting into a ring with an opponent twice his age, with his opponents accumulating a median age of 34.3.
The rising heavyweight star turned professional two years ago and already has 10 KOs on his record.
Allen emphasised the need for Itauma to fight someone who takes him past the first rounds, naming Anthony Joshua’s rival Jermaine Franklin as the perfect opponent.
“We need to see him in with someone who gives him a fight, I think someone like Jermaine Franklin.”
“I think he can become world champion, but talk of titles right now is just too much, he’s miles off.”
Moses Itauma has trained with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and is tipped for great thingsGettyHe will likely return on July 19 on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch with Daniel Dubois.
