Faro in Portugal’s Algarve will roll out new e-gates for UK arrivals this week, in welcome news for travellers who have regularly endured miserable hours-long queues at passport control at the airport in recent months.
It appeared the plan to allow Britons to use e-gates at Faro was already in place before the agreement, with announcements that they would be opening in 2022 and 2024.

Despite Faro previously announcing e-gates for Britons, a Government source said the UK-EU reset deal had made a difference and that officials have been lobbying Portugal to make life easier for holidaymakers since the agreement was struck on 19 May.
The Prime Minister has nevertheless faced criticism over his e-gates announcement, with questions over whether many e-gates would be open in time for the summer holidays and whether they would actually reduce queues due to the EU’s onerous new Entry/Exit system coming into force.
He said: “The historic deal that we signed with the EU on May 19 is in our national interests – good for bills, borders and jobs.
“Indeed, I’m delighted to confirm this morning that Faro Airport in Portugal will start the rollout of e-gate access to UK arrivals this week.”
