Worst Playing XI of IPL 2025 ft. MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant ...Middle East

The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League will be remembered for many things—RCB finally breaking their title drought, Punjab Kings’ near-miracle run, and young stars like Sai Sudharsan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stealing the spotlight. But amid the highs and heroics, there was another storyline running parallel: the spectacular fall of some of the league’s biggest names.

Big auctions don’t replicate huge outings on the field. Injuries, poor form, and a few strange tactical calls made matters worse. Whether it was a ₹27 crore megadeal gone wrong, or an aging legend bowing out quietly, these players formed the most disappointing XI of the season.

Lefties weren’t “right” this time at IPL 2025

Fascinatingly, the entire top order of this team features left-handers. This is after there was a possible choice between Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, another lefty. But we have gone ahead with Rachin, who was expected to be CSK’s x-factor at the top, but his 191 runs across 8 games barely made a dent. He was completely dropped from the team.

Ishan Kishan, despite two big knocks, fizzled out in the rest of the tournament, leaving SRH top-heavy. He made a century at the start and a 94 in his ultimate innings against RCB. In between, he was extremely poor, mirroring SRH’s dismal campaign. Apart from his twin 50+ scores, Kishan made 154 runs in 12 innings.

Rishabh Pant returned with high expectations and an astronomical ₹27 crore tag at LSG. But with just one major innings (118*), the rest of his season was littered with failures. Before his campaign-saving century, Pant mustered just 151 runs at an awful average of 13.72. His strike rate of 107.09 was also quite bad. Venkatesh Iyer, too, was an expensive misfire at KKR, scoring only 142 runs before being benched.

Now come two overseas stars – Liam Livingstone and Glenn Maxwell. Despite their T20 pedigree, the two underwhelmed massively. Maxwell’s 48 runs in 7 games for PBKS was particularly poor, especially as they reached the final without his help. While he was out due to an injury, Livingstone did not help RCB either. With 112 runs at an abysmal average of 16, the Englishman wasn’t needed much. It helped RCB that Tim David and Romario Shepherd turned up.

Perhaps the most painful inclusion is MS Dhoni, whose batting form dipped significantly. His 196 runs came at a slow pace (135.17), and his influence as a finisher was almost non-existent this year. He dropped himself to number nine during a run-chase as well, becoming a liability for a brief moment.

Rashid Khan had a dismal season by his standards—9 wickets in 15 games at an average of 57.4. While Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma looked off-colour and expensive, rarely threatening with the ball. Ishant Sharma, too, barely made any impression.
