This Artist Just Broke a Record Previously Held by Michael Jackson ...Saudi Arabia

SOS has become the longest-running No. 1 title in the 60-year history of Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart by racking up its 38th nonconsecutive week on top of the list. It comes at the album once again garnered the No. 1 position on the chart date June 7, according to Billboard.

Jackson’s Thriller previously held the title with 37 weeks atop that chart during 1983 and 1984.

SOS has now spent a mind-blowing 129 weeks on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and amazingly has not dropped out of the top 10.

The album features such hit singles as “Kill Bill,” which topped the R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart for 21 weeks, and “Snooze,” which spent 13 weeks at No. 2, according to Billboard.

SOS also got a boost when the deluxe edition LANA was released in December 2024, sparking new interest in the set with the addition of more than a dozen new songs.

Another thing to keep in mind: Thriller set that record back in the days before streaming when the chart consisted only of data for sales of physical albums. These days streaming numbers are part of the equation, so comparing the chart success of the two albums is like comparing apples to oranges.
