San Diego Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees this upcoming Saturday, June 7 in order to commemorate the Adopt-a-Pet Day initiative.
California’s Adopt-a-Pet Day is intended to “reduce shelter overcrowding and raise awareness about pet adoption,” according to a release from the San Diego Humane Society.
All adoptions include a spay or neuter, current vaccinations, microchip identification and a free veterinary exam at participating clinics.
Jordan Frey, marketing manager for the Humane Society, noted that their shelters in San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido, and Oceanside have been over capacity for the past two years. The center has nearly 2,000 animals in their care, with approximately 800 of those currently available for adoption.
Economic factors have affected the affordability of caring for an animal, according to Frey.
“We know that as housing prices go up as well, that becomes a factor for families,” Frey said. “But San Diego Humane Society is here to support pet owners through the life of their animal. That doesn’t end after they adopt from us. We have tons of resources and low-cost services to help people keep their animals whether or not they came from us.”
To make adoptions more accessible, the San Diego Humane Society also recently extended weekend adoption hours until Oct., 25, 2025. Shelters are open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The last California Adopt-a-Pet Day resulted in 164 animal adoptions at the San Diego Humane Society. Similarly, extending the shelter’s operating hours last year resulted in over 600 adoptions.
“We’re going to keep caring for (our pets) as long as they need,” Frey said. “But if something like this helps put them in the spotlight, if this helps inspire people who were already on the fence about adoption and just needed that final push, we know how valuable an opportunity like this is.”
