Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Members of the “Killer Tomatoes” horror-comedy movie franchise, much of which has been filmed in San Diego, will be in Chula Vista, Mission Beach, and Midway this week as they finish filming the latest sequel.

The movie — “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence” — is the fifth installment in the series, and offers a new look at the franchise.

You could call it a reboot. Or, as the filmmakers would say, the Killer Tomatoes have been refried.

This film borrows from current headlines, pitting “the eternal power of nature against AI’s best,” as a release about the movie says. It also offers up a juicy array of cult stars, established actors, and notable figures, such as Eric Roberts (brother of Julia), Paul Bates, and Vernee Watson.

Executive producers and screenwriters Costa Dillon and Steve Peace tapped David Ferino to direct AKT:OI.

The original Killer Tomatoes movie was originally intended as a spoof of monster films; it was co-created by Steve Peace and director John DeBello in 1978, and cost just $100,000 to film.

That one-off turned into a multigenerational cult classic with three live-action sequels: Return of the Killer Tomatoes, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back, and Killer Tomatoes Eat France.

An animated “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” television series also ran from 1990 to 1991 on the Fox Network.

“We are just going to keep trying until we get it right,” said Peace in a release.

“This is nuts,” said director Ferino in the same release. “I have to work with these guys.”

Anchor Bay Entertainment is handling distribution.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence is scheduled to debut in theaters later this year.
