DA: Ukiah woman convicted of burglary; Ukiah man convicted of abuse ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

A Ukiah woman was recently convicted of residential burglary, and a Ukiah man was convicted of ongoing sexual abuse of a child, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

According to the office of DA David Eyster, a Mendocino County Superior Court jury determined last week that Sydney Christine Shackman, 57, of Ukiah, was guilty “of burglary in the first degree, a felony and a future Strike conviction.”

Shackman was arrested and charged, the DA explains, after “law enforcement was called to a residence in Ukiah after a stranger was seen on the home surveillance system by the absent homeowner (on July 25, 2024), and Shackman was eventually discovered on the property. During the investigation, it was discovered that Shackman had entered the residence and taken items that did not belong to her from within.”

Shackman was scheduled to be sentenced the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4.

In another court case, a Mendocino County Superior Court jury found Henry Robert Frahm Rinne, 49, of Ukiah, “guilty of the Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child Under the Age of 14, a felony,” the office of DA Eyster reports, explaining that “the sexual misconduct addressed by this charge occurred from June 2016 to August 2018. The age of the victim at the time of the offenses was between eight and ten. A special thanks goes out to the victim, now 17, who remained steadfast in her pursuit of justice.”

The DA’s office also notes that “the law enforcement agencies that investigated the case, interviewed the victims and witnesses, and diligently gathered the other evidence used at trial to convict the defendant were the Ukiah Police Department and the DA’s own in-house Bureau of Investigations. The prosecutor who organized and presented the People’s evidence at trial was Deputy District Attorney Jamie Pearl, and Mendocino County Superior Court Judge Victoria Shanahan presided over the one-week trial.”

Eyster also extended “special thanks to Clinical Psychologist Mindy Mechanic, who testified as an expert witness in interpersonal trauma and counterintuitive victim behavior during the trial,” and special recognition “to an out-of-county good samaritan witness in this case. The witness not only reported observing an act of abuse to law enforcement in another county in 2018, but also took the time to testify in this trial. Without this witness, the abuse may have continued much longer.”

According to the DA’s Office, Rinne is expected to be back in court this week “on June 5 for a court trial on aggravating factors. Once these factors have been decided, the matter will be referred to the Mendocino County Adult Probation Department for a background study of the defendant and a written sentencing recommendation.”
