Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t want Ryan Garcia to rush back to the ring after undergoing successful surgery on his right hand.

Garcia will be able to resume training in six weeks’ time, but De La Hoya has advised his fighter to sit out until next year.

“He just got surgery,” De La Hoya told assembled media.

“He’s going to take a look at his shoulder now. I actually would like Ryan to think about taking the whole year off.

“Getting his mind straight and comfortable to where he feels good. There is nothing lost for him.

“He has injuries, and he has to get those fixed. But I think more importantly, he has to get his life in order.

“I’ve lived it, and I am pretty sure everyone is telling him things left and right.

“He has to take a deep breath, a step back, analyse, and reassess life to put it all in order. It’s just my opinion. I hope he takes the year off.”

Garcia looked incredibly gun-shy as he was dropped and outpointed by heavy underdog Rolly Romero last month at New York’s Times Square.

‘King Ry’ shared the Ring Magazine bill with fierce rival Devin Haney, and the plan was for both men to rematch later this year, provided they both got their hands raised.

Haney fulfilled his side of the deal by outclassing Jose Ramirez, but Garcia came up short.

It marked Garcia’s first fight since his inaugural encounter with Haney in April 2024.

Garcia dropped Haney three times en route to initially being declared the winner via majority decision.

However, the result was overturned after it was found Garcia had tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine in two tests taken around the bout.

As a result, he was slapped with a one-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).

After returning a clean test, the NYSAC reissued him with his license on April 20, and he fought two weeks later.

Garcia looked unconvincing as he combined to throw just 490 punches with Romero, making the fight the fourth-lowest output 12-round bout in boxing history.

Remarkably, Canelo Alvarez and William Scull went on to top the list one day later with 445 punches.
