AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The suspect connected to a shooting involving officers over the weekend caused a crash following a police chase that ended at a north Austin intersection, according to an arrest warrant affidavit from the Austin Police Department.

On Wednesday, the APD was expected to hold a news conference to provide more details about the shooting.

The warrant identified the suspect as 18-year-old Devin Guevara. He was arrested for evading arrest with a vehicle and was booked into the Travis County Jail on a $35,000 bond, according to online court records.

KXAN has reached out to Guevara's attorney. We will update this if a statement is received.

Around 11:15 p.m., May 31, APD officers were patrolling the 1300 block of West Braker Lane when they saw a black Hyundai that was reported stolen, according to the affidavit. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the Hyundai "ran the red light, passing North Lamar Boulevard," according to the affidavit.

"The driver of the stolen Hyundai continued evading officers over a distance of approximately 4.5 miles at reported speeds of up to 90 miles per hour at times," court records said.

Additionally, the driver ran another red light when they turned onto West Anderson Lane and North Lamar Boulevard, when the driver "sideswiped a vehicle stopped at the light." Once that happened, the Hyundai "spun around through the intersection, stopping on the west side of the intersection," according to the affidavit.

After the crash, the Hyundai was "face-to-face" with officers' APD vehicles, "who were now stopped and exiting their vehicles to conduct a high-risk car stop," court records said.

That is when the driver used a "semi-automatic pistol" and "fired multiple gunshots through the windshield" of the Hyundai towards officers as officers were "jumping out to avoid being struck by gunfire," according to the affidavit.

According to APD Chief Lisa Davis, the driver fired all bullets from the pistol.

Officers were able to take cover behind their vehicles, and they returned gunfire to the driver and struck him "once," court records said. The driver was later identified as Guevara, and police took him into custody.

Guevara told investigators the reason why he shot at officers was because "he knew the police would shoot him back, and he didn't want to live anymore."
