PhotoSort for Mac REVIEW Easily Sort Photos by Size and Quality to Save iCloud Space ...Middle East

A simple, fast, and affordable utility that enhances Apple Photos by adding powerful sorting tools for smarter photo management.

One of the biggest headaches I have when working with Photos on my Mac is the lack of sorting functionality. The only options Photos offers is to sort by date. In order to find items that are perhaps no longer needed, additional sort options would come in handy. This is where PhotoSort comes in.

About PhotoSort

PhotoSort is a macOS utility launched in January 2025 that enhances the native Photos app by adding two much-needed features: sorting by file size and sorting by aesthetic quality. If your iCloud storage is nearing capacity, PhotoSort helps identify the largest media files via a “SizeSort” album, making it easier to reclaim space without upgrading your plan. It also surfaces your best photos and videos using AI-based aesthetic ranking in a “QualitySort” album, ideal for curating large libraries with thousands of mixed-quality items.

Development on PhotoSort began in December 2024, led by Arvind Nangia. This isn’t his first app. He has previously created several photo-focused tools including Pic Scanner Gold, Pic Scanner, SnipTag, Photos Takeout, and Joggle. Arvind began his journey into app development 12 years ago as a post-retirement hobby. Now 65, he continues to build and refine apps as a passion project rather than a full-time job. Entirely self-taught, Arvind has consistently focused on creating practical, user-friendly tools that address real needs in photo management.

PhotoSort was designed with simplicity and usability at its core. Its minimalist interface reflects the app’s focus, doing just two things and doing them well. To ensure a user-friendly experience, the team invited existing users of their other photo-related apps to try out pre-release versions of PhotoSort. Their feedback was instrumental in refining the app’s interface and overall experience.

Built using Xcode and Swift, PhotoSort faced an unexpected hurdle during App Review, likely due to its ability to help users manage and reduce iCloud usage. Despite that, the team worked through Apple’s concerns one by one until the app was approved. On the privacy front, PhotoSort processes all data locally on the user’s Mac and does not collect any personal data. With five prior apps under their belt, the developers have an established testing framework that includes both internal and external testers to ensure reliability.

PhotoSort offers 100% human-powered customer support via email, ensuring users receive personal and responsive assistance. User feedback has played a key role in shaping the app, testers of early versions provided valuable input that helped refine the user interface and overall experience. Looking ahead, the development roadmap includes expanding language support to make the app more accessible to users around the world.

Main Features

Sort by File Size (SizeSort Album): PhotoSort creates a “SizeSort” album that arranges your photos and videos in descending order of file size. This feature is particularly useful for identifying large files that may be consuming significant storage space, allowing you to decide which items to offload or delete to free up space on your Mac or iCloud storage. Sort by Aesthetic Quality (QualitySort Album): The app also generates a “QualitySort” album, ranking your media based on aesthetic quality using AI-driven analysis. This helps in quickly identifying your best photos, as well as spotting low-quality images such as blurry shots or duplicates that you might consider deleting. iCloud Integration: Both the SizeSort and QualitySort albums sync with iCloud, making them accessible across your Apple devices. This synchronization facilitates consistent photo management whether you’re on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Customizable Filters: PhotoSort allows you to set specific criteria for sorting, such as filtering items larger than 10MB or smaller than 800KB, or targeting the largest items totaling a specific size. This customization aids in focusing on particular subsets of your library for more efficient management. Privacy Assurance: The app processes all data locally on your Mac and does not collect or transmit your personal data, ensuring your privacy is maintained.

Pricing and Availability

You can download PhotoSort for free from the app store, but full lifetime access costs $4.99 as an in-app purchase.

Privacy Policy

According to the App Store, no data is collected from this app. The full privacy policy can be found here.

User Experience

Upon launching PhotoSort, you’ll be prompted to grant access to your Photos library. After selecting your System Photo Library, clicking “Sort” will initiate the analysis. In the free version, you’ll see a preview of some of your largest and best photos. Upgrading to the paid version enables the full sorting functionality, creating the SizeSort and QualitySort albums within the Photos app.

The Photos app cannot be active when you run PhotoSort and the only option to access the features of PhotoSort is to open the app. There is no menu bar option — just the full app. Using PhotoSort is fairly intuitive as it only has one settings option. When you run the ‘sort’ function of the app, the utility accesses your library and adds two new albums that feature your specific sort settings. If you re-sort, PhotoSort will delete the existing SizeSort and QualitySort albums and create new ones based on your settings. I think it would be great to be able to keep the different sort folders you create rather than a fresh sort every time.

It is interesting seeing how the utility selects for different sort options. For example, I had it pull my bottom 100 photos. This was a sort based on quality and not size. So the album for SizeSort was empty but the QualitySort album had the ‘worst’ images in my library. It was mostly screenshots or pictures I took of written signs.

I really like seeing what the app thinks are the ‘best’ quality photos, but I wish the Photos app could remain open while using PhotoSort. It’s a little cumbersome having to quit each time you want to re-sort items. Functionally, PhotoSort is easy to use, but there are some features that would make it even better.

The ability to keep Photos open while using PhotoSort. The option to preview more images in PhotoSort. Add a menubar utility option. More sort options beyond quality and photo size.

All in all, it’s a clean, easy to use app and it’s very fast. My library has more than 8,500 photos and 691 videos and PhotoSort runs through it in a few seconds.

Conclusion

PhotoSort fills a significant gap in the Mac Photos app by offering two critical sorting features. It’s a simple yet powerful tool, especially for users with large libraries and limited iCloud storage. While it would benefit from a few usability tweaks — such as allowing the Photos app to remain open or enabling users to retain multiple sort results — its current feature set already adds substantial value. For a lightweight utility at an affordable price, PhotoSort delivers on its promises efficiently and thoughtfully.
