Stokes has also only just returned to bowling having undergone hamstring surgery in January, England’s captain looking great on his comeback against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge last month but still only bowling 11.2 overs in what was his first game since last December’s third and final Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

The 36-year-old made a positive return for Warwickshire in the Championship last month, taking six wickets against Worcestershire in a match where he bowled 34 overs.
Played his first Test since the 2023 Ashes against Zimbabwe last month. Having spent 15 months on the sidelines with a pectoral injury following that breakthrough summer two years ago, he looked sharp on his Test comeback. Tongue will also play for the Lions against India A this week.

Workload will be carefully managed this summer but England envisage no issues with the blisters on his left toe that affected him last winter.
He will miss the start of the India series, though, after he fractured a finger during the second ODI against the West Indies in Cardiff last weekend. Overton is expected to be out for around a month, meaning he could be available again for the third Test against India at Lord’s.

England are taking an abundance of caution over getting him back to full fitness ahead of this winter’s Ashes series in Australia.
England are confident he will be in contention for the third Test against India if he can get through two Championship games for Sussex later this month, but the fourth Test at Old Trafford a couple of weeks later looks a more realistic target.
Olly Stone
Played two Tests against Sri Lanka last summer but the fast bowler was not used during the winter tours of Pakistan and New Zealand despite being in both squads. Has been ruled out of the Test summer following knee surgery but will hope to be in the conversation for the Ashes.
