AMERICANS could claim up to $250 from a $600,000 settlement involving two major gym brands.
Equinox, which owns SoulCycle, is paying up after the New York Attorney General’s Office found it made cancelling memberships unnecessarily difficult.
GettyEquinox and SoulCycle subscribers can claim a refund of up to $250[/caption]Under New York law, subscription services must obtain consent for automatic renewals and offer an easy way to cancel.
But according to the New York Attorney General’s Office, Equinox failed to comply with those rules.
Equinox Group is a luxury fitness and lifestyle company based in the US.
It owns several high-end fitness brands, including SoulCycle, which offers indoor cycling and spinning workout classes.
Attorney General Letitia James said: “New Yorkers should be able to cancel a membership they no longer use or want without breaking a sweat.
She added: “The Equinox Group made it challenging for customers to end their membership, costing them time and money.
“As a result of my office’s settlement, New Yorkers can now cancel their membership with Equinox, SoulCycle, or any of Equinox Group’s brands much faster.”
An Equinox and SoulCycle spokesperson said: “Prior to being made aware of this inquiry, we had already begun to make changes to our terms and conditions in conformance with all statutory requirements, and our policies are in full compliance. We are pleased that this matter is resolved.”
Subscribers who filed complaints between February 9, 2021 and December 31, 2024 are eligible for a refund of up to $250 under the settlement.
New York Equinox, Equinox+ and SoulCycle members may also be able to receive $100 in compensation.
Both sets of claimants must submit their claim forms by August 2.
Equinox Gym and Equinox+ subscribers who attempted to cancel during that period are instructed to email NewYorkAGclaims@equinox.com.
SoulCycle subscribers are told to email NewYorkAGclaims@soul-cycle.com.
Requests must include the subscriber’s full name and the phone number or email address linked to their account.
Meanwhile, Top Class Actions has compiled a guide of the top ten settlements that people can claim in June.
For example, Defendants Designer Brands and DSW Shoe Warehouse, Inc. (“DSW”) have agreed to pay up to $4,429,180 into a settlement fund.
Claimants can expect around $70 each.
This settlement covers shoppers who received unwanted promotional texts from DSW between September 1, 2018, and September 1, 2024 – even after asking to stop.
Shoppers must file their claim online by June 30, 2025.
