The Weld County Redistricting Committee, which is tasked with developing three commissioner district maps for the board to review and approve by July 30, will host listening sessions for county residents to participate in the process.
The committee, which usually meets every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Weld County Administration Building, 1150 O St., will instead host two listening sessions in place of its June 5 meeting. The county is encouraging residents to attend these sessions to provide input and ask questions about the redistricting process.
These listening sessions will take place from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, Meeting Room 1, 7 Park Ave., Firestone. Another will take place from 6-7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Eaton Community Center, Ponderosa Room, 1675 3rd St., Eaton.
In March 2024, a Weld District judge ruled that the county had improperly drawn the county district lines. In response, the county filed an appeal in April 2024, leading the Colorado Supreme Court to hear the case in December.
In February, the Supreme Court upheld the Weld judge’s ruling, requiring the county to redraw the districts ahead of the 2026 election. As a result of this ruling, the county appointed nine Weld residents to the redistricting committee in April.
The committee will present three maps to the commission in a public hearing on June 30. Three additional public hearings will be held on July 9, July 16 and July 23 before a final decision and adoption of the official map is made on July 30.
If residents are unable to attend this week’s listening sessions, the county encourages them to participate in the committee’s regular meetings on Thursday once they resume their normal schedule on June 12.
Residents can also provide public input or learn more about the redistricting process by going to Weld.gov. From there, hover over the “Government” header and select “Public Information Office” from the “Departments” column.
