We pick our European Rugby Team of the Week from across the Premiership, TOP 14 and URC, using the Opta Index. Find out who made our XV.
The Premiership concluded at the weekend with Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks and Bristol Bears all booking a place in the play-offs alongside table-toppers Bath.
Meanwhile, the penultimate TOP 14 round took place and there remains plenty to play for going into the final week, with both play-off places and relegation spots firmly in the balance.
Elsewhere, we had the first knockout round of the URC, with the clubs who finished in the top four all booking their place in the semi-finals.
As the pressure ramps up, individual performances become even more important. Moments of magic or try-saving tackles could mean the difference between extending the season for at least one more week or packing your bags for the holidays…
Let’s find out which 15 men made our Team of the Week. Ten different teams are represented withing our XV, with ASM Clermont Auvergne, Bristol Bears, Gloucester Rugby, Leicester Tigers and Stade Toulousain all boasting multiple players in the lineup.
Opta’s Star Player of the Week
Baptiste Jauneau was the top player across the big three European leagues at the weekend, with the 21-year-old the latest in a long line of classy French scrum-halves.
In a performance that Antoine Dupont would have been pleased with, the Clermont scrum-half made 14 carries, beat seven defenders, made two line breaks and three offloads – no number nine bettered any of those tallies across the big three European leagues.
However, his greatest skill was bringing other players into the game. He assisted four line breaks – the joint most of any player at the weekend – and registered five try assists. Across the TOP 14, Premiership, URC, Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, only one other player has managed to assist five tries in a single game since Opta have recorded this data. That player? You guessed it: Dupont.
That’s not bad company to be in for the young Clermont half-back and if he continues this form he may well stand in for the Toulouse star when Les Bleus tour New Zealand his summer.
5 – Baptiste Jauneau assisted 5⃣ tries for @ASMOfficiel v SFP, he's just the second T14, Premiership or URC player to assist 5⃣ in a single game in the league or Europe since Opta have recorded this data, after Antoine Dupont (v Sharks, April 2023). High. pic.twitter.com/KBBVzI0UqF

Jack Willis won four turnovers for Toulouse against Lyon, the most of any forward in the big three European leagues at the weekend. The former Wasps man has always been one of the best at the breakdown but he’s become an incredibly well-rounded player during his time at Toulouse.
That was evident at the weekend as he hit double figures for carries (13), tackles (10), attacking rucks (15) and defensive rucks (14). In basketball they would call that a ‘quadruple-double’ and no other player managed it at the weekend.
Sione Tuipulotu showed just why we’re backing him to start for the Lions in Australia this summer, as Glasgow defeated the Stormers. The Scotland centre made four line-break assists, the most of any player in the URC at the weekend, and set up a try, as he pulled the strings in the Glasgow back line.
But he’s not just a distributor. With ball in hand he beat six defenders – no inside centre beat more across the big three European leagues at the weekend, while he completed 100% of his tackles (7/7).
Jack Cotgreave had a day to remember as he crossed for a hat-trick of tries for Gloucester against Northampton Saints; he was the only player to manage that at the weekend.
His impact wasn’t limited to just putting the finishing touches on tries though, as he was electric with ball in hand all afternoon. No player across Europe’s big three leagues made more line breaks than the teenager (4, level with Tom Jordan) while only Ollie Hassell-Collins (178) gained more metres (159).
While Edinburgh eventually came undone against the Bulls, Magnus Bradbury put in an impressive shift. He gained 85 metres from his 20 carries – the most by any forward at the weekend – beating five defenders in the process. In defence, he also recorded a 100% tackle success rate, completing 10/10 hits.
Julian Montoya, who will depart Leicester Tigers at the end of the season, recorded the best dominant carry rate of any of the 20 forwards to make 12+ carries at the weekend (92%), while no front rower made more carries (13) or beat more defenders (4) than the Argentina hooker.
