Chelsea have made an approach to AC Milan to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan, talkSPORT understands.
The 29-year-old French international has just one year left on his deal at the Serie A giants.
Maignan has made 163 appearances for Milan since joining from Lille in 2021GettyChelsea see a window of opportunity to sign an elite goalkeeper knowing Milan may be reticent about losing Maignan for free in 2026.
It was thought Maignan was likely to agree new terms at Milan earlier in the season, but their failure to qualify for Europe has put his future in doubt and a burden on the club’s finances.
Chelsea’s plan has always been a summer review of their goalkeepers, and there was no urgency around seeking a new shot-stopper before next season as a result.
The Blues have planned to simply rank Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and the highly-rated Mike Penders during the Club World Cup.
But if a deal for Maignan does emerge, he’d join as a number one option, calling into question the future of Sanchez.
Petrovic also hopes to be a first choice having been on loan at sister club Strasbourg and named their 2024/25 Player of the Season.
His return to Chelsea comes with a pay rise, but he is also believed to have a release clause as part of his new deal allowing him to exit.
Penders is viewed as Premier League ready, but due to his age, the 19-year-old could still be loaned out at first.
Jorgensen is expected to stay after the club invested £35m in him last summer.
Chelsea are also alert to James Trafford’s situation, although Premier League rivals Newcastle remain frontrunners for the Burnley man.
Chelsea are interested in a summer moveGetty Sanchez could face an uncertain future at the Blues if Maignan signsGettyEnzo Maresca’s side are set to announce Liam Delap as their first summer signing.
The Blues will pay his £30million release clause at Ipswich Town, who he joined last summer from Manchester City.
Chelsea will also welcome youngsters Estevao Willian, Kendry Paez and Dario Essugo to the club.
Jadon Sancho will not complete a permanent move to west London after his loan spell from Manchester United.
Chelsea had an obligation to buy him for £25m but will instead pay United a £5m penalty fee.
