97.9 The Hill WCHL has signed a new four-year contract with Learfield which will keep your hometown radio station as the flagship station for Tar Heel sports for the next four years.
The 72-year-old station, located on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, currently broadcasts UNC football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball games on its airwaves after being the original station to locally broadcast Tar Heel sports in the 1960s. Alongside the games, WCHL also broadcasts coaches’ shows for all four sports through Learfield.
“We’re honored to continue our legacy as the flagship station for Tar Heel sports,” said Aubrey Williams, General Manager of 97.9 The Hill WCHL. “This partnership with Learfield and the University is a testament to our deep roots in the Chapel Hill community and our shared passion for Carolina athletics. We’re proud to bring UNC fans high-quality coverage and unforgettable moments throughout each season, just as we have for generations.”
Some of the most memorable games in Carolina sports history have been heard on WCHL broadcasts, including five of the six NCAA championships for the men’s basketball program. On gamedays, listeners can tune in over terrestrial radio (97.9 FM/1360 AM), stream the broadcasts online or browse through our award-winning sports coverage at Chapelboro.com. During men’s basketball and football seasons, that includes original shows produced in the Chapel Hill Media Group studios before the Tar Heel Sports Network pregame programming to help inform and entertain Carolina fans.
“We are pleased to continue our relationship with WCHL, which has long been dedicated to providing Carolina fans terrific coverage of Tar Heel sports,” said UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham. “We appreciate our partnership, and it is great that our hometown radio station will remain our flagship station for years to come.”
97.9 The Hill WCHL has always been proud to be the flagship station for Tar Heel sports and to broadcast coverage to UNC fans across the greater Chapel Hill community. WCHL looks forward to bringing excitement to the Carolina fanbase for years to come.
